Typically people who have loved ones living in nursing homes suspect abuse when their family member falls, has fractures, or has unexplained bruising. However, when it comes to bed sores, many believe they are an inevitable part of aging or being immobile but that is a misconception. The fact is that bed sores are largely preventable by simply repositioning immobile residents frequently, keeping bony prominences cushioned, maintaining hygienic needs, and providing adequate nutrition.

Bed sores (also known as decubitus ulcers or pressure ulcers) form when a person’s body presses against the skin for a very long time. When that happens, the skin’s blood supply is cut off and results in skin injury. If the pressure is not relieved, the skin will become red and remain red rather than turning white when pressed with a finger. This is known as a stage 1 ulcer. Often at this stage, the individual and family will not realize that a bed sore has formed because there is no sign of ulceration. If the bed sore is not detected at this stage it can advance to more severe stages and cause other problems such as infection or even death.

Nursing homes have the obligation to provide safe and adequate care to all of their residents. In 1987, the Nursing Home Reform Act established the Residents’ Bill of Rights to residents of Nursing Homes. The rights were put in place to protect nursing home residents’ dignity and needs. The Nursing Home Abuse Guide lists the Residents’ Bill of Rights as follows:

  • The right to privacy
  • Accommodation of all needs
  • Communicate Freely
  • To be treated with dignity
  • To be free of mistreatment, abuse, or neglect
  • To exercise self-determination
  • Voice grievances without facing reprisal
  • To be free from physical restraints
  • Participate in family and resident groups
  • Participate in their own care such as notice of changes in treatment
