South Florida Personal Injury Lawyers Handling Motorcycle Crashes Throughout Florida

We are personal injury and accident lawyers who have handled motorcycle accident cases for over 40 years here in Florida. We have tremendous knowledge of the motorcycle helmet laws in this state and have represented riders who were helmetless, or who wore helmets.

For the past 7 years, Dania Beach has hosted “the Dania Beach Vintage Motorcycle Show,” which is said to be the biggest vintage bike show in all of South Florida. The 8th annual show will feature 250 antique motorcycles, music, vendors, and a lot more. With similar motorcycle shows throughout the state, there is no doubt that Florida has some of the biggest motorcycle enthusiasts in the nation and more motorcycles on the road than many other states.

Unfortunately, motorcyclists carry a stigma of being reckless drivers on the road. When there is an accident with a motorcycle on the road, most onlookers are quick to blame the biker for the collision. However, a recent Florida study is proving otherwise. According to a 10 year analysis of motorcycle accidents in Florida, 60 percent of the time, vehicle drivers are at fault in collisions with motorcycles.

A big contributing factor to vehicle drivers being at fault in motorcycle accidents is the increase of distracted drivers on the road. According the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), each day, more than 9 people are killed and 1,060 injured in the United States in crashes that involve a distracted vehicle driver. Distracted driving includes eating, reaching for something, texting, daydreaming and other sources of distraction as well. The CDC reports that one of the most dangerous types of distracted vehicle driving is texting because it requires the 3 main types of distraction which are visual (eyes off the road), manual (hands off the wheel), and cognitive (mind not thinking about driving).

Motorcyclists must be cautious because the number of distracted drivers is on the rise. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) recommends that both motor vehicle drivers and motorcycle drivers work together in an effort to reduce accidents. FDOT suggests the vehicle drivers look twice for motorcyclists and when passing a motorcycle, give the full lane to the motorcycle driver. As for bikers, the FDOT recommends that bikers make an effort to be more conspicuous on the road. Suggestions include using reflective stickers, attaching reflective patches to clothes, and wearing bright colors.
